Abstract

In International Relations Theories: from Classical Approach to the Post-Positivist Debate, I describe the intellectual journey within the field of International Relations, since the emergence of the disciple, that was born in the United Kingdom, right after the foundation of the League of Nations, up to its contemporary’s developments. Throughout this journey, the main subjects of the analysis are the great theoretical debates underlying the evolution of International Relations field, since the founding debate that opposed realism and idealism in the twenties and thirties, the behaviourist debate of the fifties and sixties, the inter-paradigmatic debate of the seventies and the eighties, up to the recent post-positivist debate. Beyond this itinerary focussed on the Anglo-Saxon developments of the field, I also provide an overview of the embryonic Portuguese theoretical production. In last chapters of the book, I present some contemporary theories with great potential to explain the world of the beginning of the XXI century and to forsee the future of the international relations.
